Green Collaboration at PT KITB: Groundbreaking of Southeast Asia's Largest PV Plant, SEG Solar

Groundbreaking SEG Solar

Batang, September 30, 2024 – PT Kawasan Industri Terpadu Batang (KITB) continues to demonstrate its commitment as Indonesia’s leading green industrial hub by holding the groundbreaking ceremony for one of its flagship tenants, SEG Solar, the largest photovoltaic (PV) manufacturer in Southeast Asia. The plant is being built on a 41.32-hectare site with a total investment of USD 500 million and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2025.

This monumental event was attended by several notable figures, including the Deputy for Investment Promotion at the Ministry of Investment, Nurul Ichwan; Acting Regent of Batang, Lani Dwi Rejeki; SEG Solar's General Counsel, Michael Eden; Director of SEG Solar Manufacturing, Antonius Weno; and President Director of PT Kawasan Industri Terpadu Batang, Ngurah Wirawan.

SEG Solar's plant at KITB will become one of the largest PV manufacturers in Southeast Asia, with a vertically integrated capacity of 5GW for ingots, wafers, solar cells, and modules. In the first phase, a production facility with a capacity of 5GW for solar cells and 3GW for solar modules will be built. This project is also expected to create more than 3,000 jobs, significantly contributing to the local economy and enhancing the workforce's skills in the PV technology sector.

The plant holds a strategic role in SEG Solar's global supply chain. The solar cell production line in Batang will vertically supply SEG's module plant in Houston, Texas, USA, ensuring full transparency in the solar module component supply chain. SEG Solar also plans to collaborate with various PV component suppliers such as wafer, ingot, junction boxes, frames, and EVA film manufacturers to establish manufacturing facilities in Indonesia.

According to Nurul Ichwan, Deputy for Investment Promotion at the Ministry of Investment, “The construction of this plant is a concrete testament to Indonesia's commitment to supporting renewable energy investments and green industries. SEG Solar will play a key role in advancing the clean energy sector in Indonesia while enhancing Batang’s competitiveness as a prime investment destination.”

Michael Eden, General Counsel of SEG Solar, also expressed his pride in collaborating with PT KITB, stating, “We chose Kawasan Industri Terpadu Batang as a strategic location to expand our operations in Southeast Asia. We believe this facility will strengthen SEG Solar’s position as a leader in the global PV industry and contribute to the region's clean energy transition.”

This project is not only a significant milestone for SEG Solar but also a major step toward creating the largest PV industry in Southeast Asia. According to Ngurah Wirawan, President Director of KITB, “SEG Solar’s presence at KITB is a tangible realization of our vision to build a sustainable, smart, and eco-friendly industrial estate. We are confident that this project will drive the transformation of the green industry in Indonesia and the Southeast Asia region.”

The SEG Solar plant at KITB is not only a symbol of the strategic partnership between Indonesia and a leading multinational company but also reinforces KITB’s position as a hub for innovation and sustainability, shaping the future of the green industry.
